We've heard it before, but it still rings true that content is king. From video to ads to SEO to social storytelling and so on! Messaging is essential to building a brand and creating awareness, but what happens if your messaging is inconsistent and lacks strategy?

Recently, I was helping a business with a media opportunity they had secured by ensuring that the writer had everything needed to complete the article. While speaking to the writer after the interview, I quickly realized that the business had made conflicting statements that didn't match the content on its website and social channels.

Although we fixed this situation quickly, it could have been a costly mistake for the business by affecting sales and reputation.

 When I dug a little deeper, I learned that the person interviewed was a recent hire and didn't know the company brand yet. I also realized the company, in business for over 10 years with high seven-figure annual revenue, didn't have a brand messaging strategy (if you had seen the blank stares I received during that Zoom conversation 😳).

They had traditional brand guidelines (logo, font, colors, etc.) but didn't have guidance on messaging, identity, values, vision, or mission. It made total sense why the employee was clueless about what to say during the interview. They didn't understand the brand!

Think of it this way:

Would you plant flowers and set up a door to enter a house without building the foundation or walls first? Sounds silly, right? But that's what this company did. They focused on the decor and not the structure.
